The Ultimate Power BI Date Table

What is the Ultimate Date Table?

Every effective Power BI semantic model is built on the foundation of a robust date table. I am excited to share with you the Ultimate Date Table that I have meticulously developed and refined over the years.

This table includes not just the standard date divisions like Years, Months, Quarters, and Days, but it extends far beyond to encompass Fiscal Years, Fiscal Quarters, and much more.

You can download this tool completely free, available as a ready-to-use .pbix file. The beauty of downloading the PBIX file, is that all the columns have already been configured with the correct "Sort By" options, descriptions have been set and relationships created.

What is the Date Periods table?

The date table is an extension of the date table, used to filter common date periods such as Year To Date, Previous 90 Days, Next Year etc.

These can be used to great effect on slicers to give users a more user friendly way of filtering dates compared to the native options.

Built 100% in Power Query

All tables are created using Power Query, meaning fast performance .

Neat. Tidy. Organised.

Query steps renamed. Queries organised into folders. User friendly column names.

Configure with Parameters

Easily configure your date table by updating the built-in parameters

Commonly Used Date Periods

Quickly build common date period slicers. Or use them to filter visuals without creating complex time intelligence measures in DAX

Day & Month Initial Columns

Save space on the X-axis with 1 character initials for Day and Month name

Fiscal Year Support

Does your financial year start part way through the year? No worries, enter the fiscal start month in the parameter and use the pre-build fiscal columns

Dynamic Slicers

Ever had a monthly report that uses a slicer, but needs to be updated to the latest value each month? Well, now you don't have to with the Dynamic Slicer columns.

Pre-Built Hierarchies

Save time and keep it consistent with pre-built hierarchies. One for Date Hierarchy (Year, Quarter, Month, Day) and one for Fiscal Hierarchy (Fiscal Year, Fiscal Quarter, Month, Day)

Filter Out Future Dates

It's annoying when you create a chart and the x-axis goes off into the future when you don't want it to. Filter them out using the Is Future Date column set to false.

User Friendly Descriptions

All columns have descriptions set, giving users a useful hover over prompt as to what the column means.
